October 14, 2011
Today I’m happy to be able to share with you a new book all about the wonders of coconut oil written by my old friend, Cricket Desmarais. Cricket is a writer, dancer, yoga teacher, mother, boat captain, poet…..and the list goes on and on. Believe me, she’s pretty amazing! Her latest work, I love Coconut Oil: 56 Simple Tips For Everyday Use, is the result of five years of research and experience with the awesomeness of coconut oil. I plan to get a copy for myself as soon as Cricket gets the logistics of shipping to Canada from sunny Key West, Fl. all sorted out. I’ll be sure to let you know when we get the green light for ordering. In the meantime, you can check out the book’s Facebook page for up to date info. You can send Cricket an email to let her know you’re interested in purchasing a copy so she knows just how many folks north of border love coconut oil too.

October 11, 2011
Here is an interesting video interview with Rod Stryker about the teacher student relationship in yoga that’s worth taking a listen to. Rod Stryker is widely considered to be one of the pre-eminent yoga and meditation teachers in the United States. He is the founder of ParaYoga and has taught Tantra, Meditation, and Hatha Yoga for more than thirty years. He is one of the few Western teachers capable of articulating an authentic experience––one that has been practiced and handed down from teacher to student for literally thousands of years.
Yin Yoga Workshop next weekend @ Feel Yoga, Kingston, On
October 7, 2011
Fall is a great time of transition for most of us and practice is a great way to keep us grounded and in the physical body, rather than allowing our thoughts to drift in the nethers of the land of future tripping. That place where everything is either lovely or horrible, depending on our mood, fears, and insecurities at the time.
If your normal practice as been derailed by summer, or you’ve been too busy lately to settle into a routine around your practice, why not come out and kick start your practice with this afternoon immersion into the Yin yoga? Whether you’re new to the practice or a seasoned veteran, this workshop will allow you to reconnect with yourself on a deep level and provide insight into your current physical/mental/emotional condition.
In this three hour workshop we will focus on the foundations of the Yin yoga and explore it’s roots in mindfulness through two full sequences of practice. Students will have the opportunity to share their experiences in guided thought provoking discussion periods and have time throughout for journaling and reflection.
The workshop is conveniently located in Kingston, On so I hope to see many of our Ottawa and southeastern Ontario friends out for practice. This is the second in a series of 6 workshops being held monthly through to Feb. so if you aren’t able to make this one, please consider joining us next month.

October 6, 2011Everyone loves soup. Right? There’s just something so wonderfully delicious about a hot, steamy bowl of nourishment. Especially on a cold day. And then of course there if the Soup Nazi of Seinfeld fame which most people are familiar with. I bring this up because once the weather begins to turn cold here in Ontario, I always hear people saying they wish there was a place that had good soup nearby. Not just one soup a day, but multiple soups each and every day. Then today as I was searching for some on line recipe confirmation that my idea to add Greek style yogurt to my usual tomato soup, was in fact a great idea, I stumbled up this wonderful video. How sweet is that? And the music is so pretty. Don’t you just wish that you were in Paris right now siting at the lovely little Le bar a soupes? I sure do.

For most of us, the photo on the left embodies all that Thanksgiving is. Unless of course you’re a vegetarian or vegan. If so, than you’re probably already well versed in how to deal with one of the biggest food related holidays of the year. For some folks, it’s no big deal. They skip the turkey, gravy, and stuffing that was cooked inside the turkey. For vegans it gets a bit more complicated with the mashed potatoes being done with oil not butter, and the usual vegetables done with cheese sauce are likely served with a nutritional yeast based ‘fake cheese’ sauce.
Vegan desserts are another thing altogether though as often they are better than the real deal and, not as sweet. So this post is to offer some support to those of you that would normally opt for the standard Thanksgiving menu. It’s also for our current group of cleansers that are now on Day 9 of 21 and are being faced with some tough choices this holiday weekend. What I suggest is that they go ahead and give themselves permission to have whatever they want. It’s not going to change all that they’ve accomplished so far, but they will notice how uncomfortable they feel after eating if they dive right in without restraint. I would suggest that you never do the Tofukery thing. Not only is it just gross, it’s overly processed. Better to eat a real bird than a fake one. Just my opinion.
So whether you’re cleansing or you just looking for some healthy inspiration, I hope you’ll find these links to be useful. This is one of my favorite websites. I love everything that I have ever made from Heidi’s book. (* Warning she does like to use cheese and yogurt generously in her recipes, but if you’re vegan, just omit it.) If you skip back a few posts, you’ll find the review of her book that Jenny posted. You can also go here, but I would steer clear of the mains and go with the sides. This also looks good, although I have not made it yet myself. If you have any other favorites that you’d like to share, please do so either on our blog or our Facebook page.
